Canva AI Video Generator: What It Does, What It Doesn't

Canva's AI video generator is a tool inside Canva AI called Create a video clip. As of October 2026 you type a prompt and get one clip, 8 seconds with sound or 6 seconds without. It draws on a monthly AI allowance, and Canva's help pages say free plans have no access.

What Canva's AI video tools do

Canva has several AI video tools, and the names blur together. Create a video clip is the one on its AI video generator page. You write a prompt, optionally attach a reference image, and Canva returns one video. Canva's help page gives the length as 8 seconds with audio or 6 seconds without and says to allow up to 2 minutes for it to finish. Its features page adds 16:9, one video per prompt, and audio that includes dialogue, sound design and music. You can preview the clip, download it, or open it in the video editor to add text, trim it or lay music over it.

Canva's features page says Create a video clip is powered by Google's Veo 3, and Google Cloud lists the later Veo 3.1 for retirement on November 17, 2026 or later, so a Veo-based feature can change models and the features page is where to see which one Canva names today.

The other three tools do different jobs:

• Magic Media makes text-to-video clips. Canva's help pages say every generated video is 4 seconds long, and they describe the clips as silent.

• Image to Video animates a still in Smart mode (Canva adds the motion) or Custom mode (you describe it). Canva's help page says clips are fixed at 5 seconds, though some currently come out at 3, keep the image's aspect ratio and come without audio. The page says it works on Free accounts while monthly AI allowance remains.

• Magic Video works from your own footage. You upload 1 to 10 clips or photos, add a prompt, and Canva cuts them into a 60-second vertical video with templates, transitions and music. Canva says it is included with all plans, free ones too.

Inside Canva AI the system decides between a Magic Video and a video clip from what you type and attach, so you do not always choose the tool yourself.

What it doesn't do

As of October 2026, Canva's help and features pages state these limits.

• Length. A clip tops out at 8 seconds, and you get one video per prompt.

• Language. Prompts work only in English.

• Audio. In a clip that comes with sound, you cannot change the audio by hand.

• Allowance. Canva lists Create a video clip among its Ultra AI tools, which share one monthly allowance with conversational design and image creation. Its AI usage page puts that allowance at up to 20 Ultra uses a month on Pro, Teams and Nonprofit plans and up to 40 on Business and Enterprise. Canva calls these estimates and says real use usually lands at the lower end. Free plans get no Ultra access, and once you reach your limit the Ultra tools stay unavailable until the monthly reset.

• Plans. The features page lists Pro, Business, Enterprise and Nonprofit and says each gets a limited number of clips a month, without naming the number. At launch on June 17, 2025, Canva's newsroom post gave an initial limit of 5 video generations a month, so expect the figure to move. Your own balance shows under Settings, Billing, AI usage.

• Image to Video. Premium stock images and images with transparent backgrounds are not supported, and Canva says facial animation is imperfect.

That makes Create a video clip a short-shot tool: a few seconds of footage that lands inside a design you are already building.

Where a studio with a model per job differs

In AIGE you choose a model for each generation, among them Kling V3 and Seedance 2.0. Lengths follow the model: Kling makes 3 to 15 seconds and Seedance 2.0 up to 15, so a single shot can run past Canva's 8 seconds. You can start from text alone or from a picture, and the picture does not change the price.

The credit cost shows before you press Generate. At the time of writing, an 8-second Kling V3 Pro clip with sound, the longest a Canva clip gets, costs 135 credits, and a 15-second one costs 252 credits. A 5-second Seedance 2.0 Fast clip at 720p costs 121 credits. Price moves with the model, the length, the resolution and the sound, and some models and longer clips need a higher plan. Which one to pick
