Nano Banana is Google's nickname for Gemini's image models, so it is part of Gemini, not a separate product. Google's newest is Nano Banana 2.1, generally available since 6 October 2026. AIGE's image menu has entries labelled Nano 2.1, Nano Pro and Nano Lite, and AIGE's own guide calls its everyday model Nano Banana 2.
Nano Banana is a nickname, Gemini is the family
Google's image guide for the Gemini API says it in a single line. Nano Banana is the name for Gemini's native image generation capabilities. Gemini is the whole family, and Nano Banana is the part that draws and edits pictures. Every model with that name is a Gemini model.
The name started as a codename. Google's team had already locked in the technical name, Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, but still needed a public codename to enter the unreleased model on LMArena, a public site where people vote anonymously between two unnamed models. The nickname came late one night. Google's blog (15 January 2026) says it stuck even though the model's official name stayed Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. When Gemini 3 Pro Image arrived, its brand name became Nano Banana Pro. Google also put a banana emoji on the Create image chip in the Gemini app.
What Google calls each Nano Banana model today
This is Google's own list from its Gemini API docs, read on 27 October 2026. The first column is the nickname people use and the second is the official name.
Nickname | Official name | API id | What Google says |
|---|---|---|---|
Nano Banana 2.1 | Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 |
| Generally available since 6 October 2026, the main model for image generation and editing |
Nano Banana 2 Lite | Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image |
| The fastest and cheapest of the set, generally available since 30 June 2026 |
Nano Banana 2 | Gemini 3.1 Flash Image |
| The previous generation, deprecated on 6 October 2026 with no shutdown date announced |
Nano Banana Pro | Gemini 3 Pro Image |
| The premium choice for the most complex visual tasks |
Nano Banana | Gemini 2.5 Flash Image |
| The legacy original |
So "Nano Banana" on its own can mean the whole line or just the original model. Nano Banana 2, 2.1 and Lite are three different models, so read the number and the suffix.
Where Nano Banana shows up in AIGE
AIGE is its own studio, not Google's Gemini app. It puts several image models in one menu: the entry labelled "Nano 2.1", Nano Lite and Nano Pro, next to Recraft 4.1 and GPT Image 2. The Nano Pro entry is Gemini 3 Pro Image, the model Google markets as Nano Banana Pro.
The label "Nano 2.1" and AIGE's model guide do not match: the guide names the same everyday entry Nano Banana 2. This article does not say which Google release runs behind that entry, so the table above is about Google's lineup and the menu labels are AIGE's.
A 1K image costs 8 credits on the Nano 2.1 entry, 15 credits on Nano Pro and 4 credits on Nano Lite. At 4K Pro is the cheaper of the two big entries: 30 credits against 48 credits. Editing a photo you attach costs the same as making a new image at that size. A saved character goes in as the reference, so the face stays the same across a set. The studio shows the credit cost next to Generate before you run anything.
Sizes, prices and when to use each are laid out on the Nano Banana guide, and the Pro versus 2 comparison is on the Nano Banana Pro page.
Which one to pick
AIGE's own guide recommends Nano Banana 2, the entry the menu labels "Nano 2.1", for everyday images and edits at 1K or 2K, where it is the cheaper choice. It sends quick drafts before a final render to Nano Lite, and anyone who wants Google's Pro model, or a 4K image, to Nano Pro. Results differ by subject, so run the same prompt on two entries before you settle. The AI image generator page covers the other models in the menu too, including the ones that aren't Google's.
Honest note: names move faster than tools. Google already lists Nano Banana 2 as deprecated, so check which version a tool names before you compare its images with another tool's.
